The Maugean skate is a mysterious, prehistoric fish species found nowhere else on Earth. It lives only in Tasmania’s Macquarie Harbour, a fragile, low-oxygen waterway nestled beside the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.
This ancient species has survived since the time of the dinosaurs. But today, its population is plummeting and extinction is an urgent threat.
In March 2025 the Albanese government weakened nature protections, prioritising vested interests by handing special treatment to the salmon industry, the very industry pushing the Maugean skate to the brink. It set a precedent that no World Heritage Area is safe.
This isn’t just a sticker, it’s a statement of solidarity. It reflects the community’s belief that Australia’s nature laws should actually work to protect threatened species and the habitat they call home. About the artist:
This sticker artwork was created by Andris Osenieks, an artist based in Birregurra. Andris works across sculpture, ceramics, photography and printmaking. Andris believes the planet we live on has a natural rhythm which is expressed in the beauty and diversity of the natural world.
