Spero-Wanderer Wilderness: A compelling case for an extension to the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area

A celebration of one of Lutruwita / Tasmania’s last unprotected wild places. Spero-Wanderer Wilderness showcases the rugged beauty, rich biodiversity and deep cultural significance of the Spero-Wanderer region through striking photography and thoughtful storytelling.

Located in the remote south-west of the island, this vast landscape of buttongrass plains, lush rainforests, tannin rich rivers and wild coastlines rivals the beauty of the adjacent Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.

Despite its incredible natural values, mining exploration drilling and licences cover most of the Spero-Wanderer. Since 2023, the Wilderness Society has led regular expeditions to document and photograph the area’s landforms and lifeforms—the latest chapter in a 50-year effort to see this remarkable place protected under World Heritage.

World Heritage significance:

The Spero-Wanderer wilderness demonstrates cultural and natural values consistent with multiple UNESCO World Heritage criteria. Every copy supports the Wilderness Society’s work to protect wild places and advocate for World Heritage protection in Tasmania.
