Mary River Turtles were a popular pet in 60s and 70s Australia. Back then, they were known as the “penny turtle”.
But they're worth heaps more as seed-poopers, planting fruit trees that reinforce the river banks.
You don't have to look ugly to Save Ugly. We’re celebrating the not-so-cute critters that support life on earth—and you can too! Designed by local and international artists, these tees are rearing their ugly heads for a limited time only, so don't miss out.
Edith Rewa is a textile designer and illustrator originally from Yendon, in rural Victoria. She was first drawn to the Mary River Turtle’s majestic moss growth, but it was their smiley, chin-spiked faces—and bum-breathing skills!—that ultimately won her affection.
